Margin vs. Markup: What's the Difference?
Profit Margin
Margin is the percentage of the selling price that is profit. It tells you how much of every dollar earned is actual profit.
Markup
Markup is the percentage of the cost that you add on top to get the selling price. It tells you how much you're charging above cost.
Example: A product costs $40 and sells for $100. The profit is $60. The margin is 60% (60/100), but the markup is 150% (60/40). Same product, same profit, different percentages.
